The British Are Coming! (Again.) |
|
Think back to the 1981 when ‘Chariot’s of Fire’ writer Colin Welland triumphantly held aloft his Oscar and said: “The British are coming.” (Cue rolling tumbleweed...) A mere 27 years later, his words may finally have some resonance, as UK TV trade newspaper Broadcast is reporting that a second BBC head of drama, Julie Gardner, could be on her way to Los Angeles to join Jane Tranter As head of drama for BBC Wales, Julia Gardner has established the BBC’s Cardiff studios as major centre for drama. Among the success produced there are ‘Doctor Who’, ‘Torchwood’ and ‘Merlin’. Broadcast has now reported that Ms Gardner will join Jane Tranter at BBC Worldwide in Los Angeles early in 2009. Ms Tranter will co-head BBC Worldwide Productions in the US. Her position will be EVP Programming and Production, with the remit to drive forward BBC Worldwide’s US scripted and reality business from its Los Angeles base. Broadcast has suggested that Ms Gardner is likely to become Ms Tranter’s deputy, providing a very strong team. Currently Ms Tranter is Controller of Fiction for BBC Drama and is working through her last few weeks in London where she has overseen a string of success for the BBC. The BBC has confirmed that Ms Gardner will step down from her current role in January. However, it has responded to Broadcast’s assertion, saying: “Julie has not announced any plans to move.” Meanwhile, it seems Ms Tranter is a tough act to replace: as of mid November, the BBC has not announced her successor. Part of the delay may stem from the way the commissioning aspects of her UK role have been transferred away from the new Controller’s job description. This is being perceived as having made the job less attractive to those aspiring to shape TV drama in the way that Ms Tranter has. The commissioning role now lies with Ben Stephenson, who was appointed Controller, Drama Commissioning, in September.
