Skins - Writing Comedy For Teenagers (Jamie Brittain Interview)

JamieBrittain85x113.jpg"A bunch of impossibly glam teens getting into impossiblyglamorous problems?" "Footballers' Wives" for sixth formers? "The harder they party the more empty they seem"? Maybe. What's indisputable is that 'Skins' actively scouts teenagers for its writing team, aims itself fairly and squarely at a teenager market - and tookthe best drama prize at the esteemed Rose d'Or awards in Switzerland lastMay. It all started off as a short storyscribbled down by a teenager called Jamie Brittain... (Downloadable audio interview)

It's fair to say Jamie had a leg up in getting his idea tothe big screen – his dad is a man called Bryan Elsley – who just happens to be oneof the best dramatists in the UK.

Jamie would be the first to admit that when he wrote his first episode for the showhe had never written any other drama, and needed a lot of guidance.

But it'salso true that after a LOT of hard work he's developed the skills to do morethan hold his own – it was a Jamie episode that kicked off series three inJanuary.

This is an intriguing interview – it gives a lot of insightinto the process of writing for a ground breaking new series, from the point ofview of a brand new writer, who has direct access to one of the best in thebusiness.

Of particular interest might be what Jamie has to say abouthow they are always looking out for teenage writers – and how, in his view, anyone can be taught to write.

How they picked one of their new writers out of acompetition – and how many entries that competition got.

And how, most crucially, he talks about how a particular socialnetworking site is a direct route through to the inner writing team – and howan approach on there WILL lead to your script being read. (You might just live to regret THAT revelation, Jamie.)
