Page One Invites Yorkshire and Humber Writers to Pitch For Development Support

A UK government-backed development agency wants to hear from writers in the north of England with ideas suitable for feature films, television or narrative gaming.

Writers in the Yorkshire and Humber region have until January 29, 2009 to submit outlines to Page One, part of Screen Yorkshire. It aims to develop projects which production companies can option.

Screen Yorkshire is one of the UK’s screen agencies which regionally promotes and supports the development of a film, TV, games and the interactive media sector.

Applications, including story outline, a writing sample, and a CV, need to be sent in by January 29 2009. The writing sample should be a completed script not less than 10 pages long. Ideas for development should be submitted in the form of a one-page outline of the proposed project.

Those selected – up to ten writers for each strand – will receive a fee of £500 and support to write a treatment. Further selection of up to four writers in each strand could then see projects optioned and developed professionally. Selection will reflect the interests of the production companies Page One is working with, in this instance Warp X and Rollem Productions.

Successful writers will be paid an option fee by the production company in addition to the writing fee to develop their projects to first draft script, and will be supported by industry experts and when appropriate by the development executive.

Page One says the scheme “should not been seen simply as an opportunity to get a project picked up.

“Along the way there will be a three-day ‘bootcamp'/workshop that will mix master-classes with intensive project interrogation, culminating in the writers having 15 minutes to each pitch their projects to an expert panel.

“The writers who demonstrate a combination of aptitude and understanding of their project will then receive a fee of £500 to write a treatment with expert assistance and script editor support. And following assessment of the treatments and in-depth interviews those writers and projects considered to be of a high enough standard will have their work optioned and developed professionally.”

Warp X and Rollem productions are both “keen to see stories that are contemporary, edgy, and a twist on familiar genres.”

Warp X is looking for feature films, and Rollem for one-off dramas for television. “Writers should be familiar with previous productions from these companies, and with current feature film releases and broadcast single dramas,” says Page One.

“We are looking for writers with passion, commitment, flair and talent, who can demonstrate the ability to write well under pressure and work to deadlines. Above all, we are looking for original voices telling fresh new stories that can find and move an audience. Experience of writing for the screen, for radio or the theatre is not necessary, but will be an advantage.”

An introductory seminar to Page one takes place on January 10, 2009 in Bradford, Yorkshire, for writers new to Screen Yorkshire who are interested in applying. The seminar will cover the basics of the application process, what Page One is looking for, and key points to bear in mind in terms of developing story ideas.

"Nothing I write about my journey with Phil can adequately describe his patience, diligence and the wonderful way he has coached and counselled me in all aspects of screenwriting.
