How To Write For Doctor Who - Toby Whithouse

tobywhithouse85-115.jpgToby Whithouse is a massively experienced TV writer. Recently he's worked on Doctor Who, Torchwood, and Hotel Babylon, devised his own show No Angels, and created the current instant cult supernatural show called Being Human. In this audio interview he talks about screenwriting in general, his career to date, devising Being Human, and describes what it was like bringing back a classic character to the Doctor Who series.

Toby's a great talker, and in this interview he really goes to town on a wide range of subjects, including:

  • What made him start writing in the first place when, as he puts it, there are some days he thinks he 'couldn't write 'F**k on a dusty blind'
  • How he got his agent
  • How writing in the theatre and entering the right competition is a great way to get noticed
  • Why you need a calling card script
  • The inside story on coming up with the episode in which Sarah Jane returned to Doctor Who
  • What it takes to write all six episodes of your own show
  • His advice for new writers on breaking into the industry

And an awful lot more!

"Nothing I write about my journey with Phil can adequately describe his patience, diligence and the wonderful way he has coached and counselled me in all aspects of screenwriting. Phil is an amazing person to work with because if he thinks your work good he tells you so and if not, well he tells you that too, but then immediately goes about working with you to improve. I've learned so much. Thanks Phil." Bev McMullen, Kamloops, British Columbia, Canada

"As senior media executive in the states with over 20 years experience producing TV and running a major TV/Recording Studio I've recently dedicated myself to writing full time... Best to all of you..." Andy Kadison, New York, NY
