How Important Is It To Get Grammar And Vocabulary Right?

Q. How important is English grammar in submitting a spec script? English isn't my native language, so I am not confident about grammar or authentic dialogue. If the story and characters are strong, can mistakes in grammar or other oversights lead to a rejection or putting the script aside after reading just a few pages?

A. I'd love to say that your presentation doesn't matter, and, indeed, once you get established it will be less important, but in the early days when you are submitting your scripts cold to people who don't know you then I do believe that if you are not punctilious about presentating you could well have a problem. Rightly or wrongly, they just might not have the patience to read your stuff fully if there are those sort of problems.

If I were you I would try to make the verbal, face to face pitches first, by whatever means it takes to achieve that – or concentrate on building your own reputation by working with people in your own language first - or find someone who is a native speaker, AND a good writer, and get them to correct as many errors as they can find.
