Screenplays Wanted – Hollynorth Project

by Phil Gladwin on April 18, 2008

Well, as I seem to be in the market for posting good leads for script submissions at the moment, here’s another one that might be worth your attention if you’re in any kind of film studentship at the moment in North America/Canada.

Here’s what the website says is their mission:
‘To find gifted screenwriters and directors across North America. Students and alumni from film programs throughout Canada and the US are strongly encouraged to submit High Concept Thrillers, Comedy, Family, Fantasy, Sci Fi, Horror, Action Adventure and Drama. The HollyNorth project gives you direct access to Hollywood decision makers that read all marketed specs. Quality over quantity is what sets the HollyNorth project apart from any other writing competition, or pitch fest in existence.’

I don’t know anyone involved in this, but it looks interesting – particularly the lack of reading fee!

Here are the details:

The Synopsis of “Rex” (Copyright effective 6/21/06 per form Pau3-067-028)

Lew Solomon a contender for the middleweight championship and his wife, Joclene visit a psychic to see if she can foretell if he will be victorious in a forth-coming fight. She predicts that he will win and also predicts that Joclene will give him a son. After being intimidated by Lew, Ora reluctantly forewarns that the boy will cause the death of his father. Terrified of the thought of being killed by his own son, Lew puts the boy up for adoption. He then finds out the whereabouts of the adoptive parents and arranges for the boy’s death.

Shortly thereafter, Joclene finds a notation in Lew’s computer that read, “See Kirksy on the 12th about John and Laura Collins” She is so curious, she hires a P.I. to find out who these people are. She is able to locate John Collins, but not Kirksy. Joclene visits John and learns that he and his wife adopted a boy. However, they were both killed by a hit and run driver. Joclene is certain that her son is dead and drops the matter.

Several years later Lew has lost and regained the championship. His next opponent is a fighter named Rex Combs who has a perfect record and is much younger. Lew is defeated by a knockout in the seventh round and consequently dies in the ring.

After the funeral, Rex visits Joclene to offer his condolences, monetary support and the championship belt as a peace offering. She accepts the belt, but after thinking about it, returns it expressing that he is the rightful owner. Consequently their friendship develops into a relationship and they begin to see a lot of each other and eventually marry.

Just prior to his first defense of the title, Rex is approached by Donna Sphinx a ruthless, gangster type and fight promoter. She offers him a handsome sum of money to throw his next fight. When Rex refuses she threatens his life. Edward Johnson, Donna’s secretary then contacts Rex with a proposal. For a price he offers secret information about Donna and shocking photographs of her that will counteract her threat.

Donna discovers that Johnson has stolen the photographs from her safe and has him murdered. The police catch the assassins in the act and one of them is killed and other one is captured while committing the crime. For a lesser sentence the survivor agrees to turn state’s evidence implicating Donna as a co-conspirator. With the prospect of receiving a life sentence in prison and the fact that the world now knows her secret, she takes her own life.

A year later Joclene gives birth to a boy. One day while watching the news on TV she sees the sentencing of a man named Kirksy Love. He is given twenty years to life for distribution of drugs. She feels that, he’s got to be the same Kirksy mentioned in Lew’s computer. Her P.I. locates Kirksy’s wife and Joclene pays her to be taken to the penitentiary to see her Kirksy. During their visit, Joclene agrees to pay Connie $150,000 if Kirksy tells of his connection with her deceased husband. Inasmuch as he is dying of terminal cancer, he agrees. He tells her that Lew hired him to kill the son of John and Laura Collins.

Joclene tells Rex the story and he suggests that she contact the adoption agency to verify that John and Laura Collins were actually the people who adopted her son.

At the adoption agency Joclene and Jeannie, Rex’s sister are informed that the couple who adopted her son were actually named John and Laura Clemens. Joclene remembered that Lew was famous for getting people’s names confused. She is elated to learn that her son is still alive until Jeannie informs her that the adoption agency also made a mistake. John and Laura Clemens were Rex’s foster parents for two years before her parents, adopted him. She remembered as a child going with her parents to pick up Rex at the home of the Clemens’. So in reality, Rex is Joclene’s biological son

Joclene is devastated by the news and kills herself. When Rex finds her dead he attempts suicide but only disables himself. Since Jeannie was the one who revealed the awful truth, she assumes the responsibility of caring for Rex. and his son.

Subject Line: Love Story about a Young Man and Woman who Struggle against Cultural Obstacles, Cosmic Sanctions, and Physical Torture to Attain True Love.

Dear Producer:

THE CAGE AND THE LOTUS is a romantic drama about Ron and Preeti, who defy their parents’ prejudices, ambitions and dictates, the torture in a German Prison camp, and physical handicap to attain the pure essence of love.

Here’s a brief synopsis: In the beginning of the film, Ron Gordon (a young man) saves Preeti Rijal (a young woman) from two men who attempt to rape her on a subway platform in Manhattan. Ron and Preeti fall in love. Japan bombs Pearl Harbor. Ron is drafted into the war as a bombardier. The Germans capture him after shooting down his plane and take him as POW to Stalag Luft I, a German prison camp. Two SS officers club Ron with submachine guns, drag him to a cooler confinement cell, sodomize and castrate him.

The war ends. Knowing that he cannot go back to Preeti, he asks his friend Jack Diamonds to write a letter to Preeti to tell her that the Germans killed him, his last wish being that she should marry Sunder. Ron, now a priest, attempts to commit suicide. He gives up the idea when he sees LOTUS patterns on his window curtains. He travels to New York and meets Preeti at the lotus pond where they often met before the war. Here they realize that true love can transcend physical handicap.

THE CAGE AND THE LOTUS is a statement proclaiming that a man/woman has the power to grow out of the MUD of fears, hates, prejudices and sufferings to blossom out like a LOTUS in deepest joys and to escape from the CAGE of social conventions that imprison, restrict, oppress, torture and destroy the human spirit.

I have completed five novels, five books of poems, three screenplays, and ten plays. In 1988, my play, “From Ganges to Demerary,” was staged at York University, Toronto, Canada. I have just finish an exicting screen play with hopes and desire
that it will be enjoy by the public –ultimately, on film!
Play is of an anceint time before the horrors of wars, against
and for, the dominions and the knowledge of the human kind.
There is nuance of conservation and the struggle of the understandings between peoples’ and their forward march
towards destiny. An Emperor is finially given the crown
of God. Although the play’s cast is orient, this screen-play can hold
that of an arabic flavor. Title: “Hiba” ; A mountain on the isle of
Hiroshima; In Arabic; A Gift from God.

Once the Open is read — one may clearly see that all of the
screen-play was brushed — including Stage directions.
Enjoyable just to read. I offer my first play free to expression
and enjoy within “The Arts” wanna see! e-mail

ONE MILLION WAYS TO DIE is a psychological thriller/horror in the vein of “Seven” and “Saw” about a psychotic serial killer obsessed with exploring all one million ways to kill those who choose not to appreciate the full beauty of art. Each one of his victims is killed in a fashion that one would construe as original art. An FBI agent who has trouble balancing his family life and his career attempts to end the streak of terror produced by the art obsessed serial killer. A professor, who the killer respects and confides in, aides the authorities in the pursuit of the man but seems to always be one step too slow. Everything is brought to an end by a violent explosion, but little closure is given when it is revealed that a key character ends up having ties to the serial killer they never thought was possible.

Logline: An FBI agent’s life is in shambles as he is in pursuit of a psycho-path killer who selects his victims according to their lack of appreciation for art.

DARK MENTAL is a drama in the vein of “Crash” and “Babel” about Shawn Owens, a high school basketball phenom who is working hard to achieve his dream of playing professional basketball and taking his family from the poverty-stricken environment that plagues them. These individuals must deal with the death of loved ones, child abuse, fallen dreams, addiction, rape, divorce, and the disintegration of their families.

A classmate of Shawn Owens is physically and mentally abused by her drug addicted parents. Shawn Owens’ older brother goes to rob them of their drugs so he can provide for his family as a gun fight ensues. The principal of the high school is having sexual relations with the drug addicted mother who is only known to him as a stripper at his favorite gentlemen’s club. The principal proceeds to pass a sexually transmitted disease to his wife of nine years and looks to get revenge on the stripper that is causing him such marital issues. The daughter who is being abused turns to her teacher as Shawn Owens accidentally walks in on inappropriate advances by the teacher and tries to flea the scene as if he saw nothing. A drug crazed mother discovers that her daughter’s principal is her highest paying customer at the gentlemen’s club and the man who sought revenge by beating her to a pulp. Terrified at the discovery, the mother drives away from the school recklessly and does something that will change the life of everyone involved, and the outcome one’s future. Nine people in a small rural town are unknowingly linked at the hip by vices so dark, consequences of pain prove ominous. This is “Dark Mental.”

Logline: When links in a chain are replaced with people, the most ominous of consequences are just around the corner.

THE FUNDRAISERS is a comedy in the vein of “Superbad” and “American Pie” about three college students. Amir, a middle-eastern kid who rants incessantly to the point of absurdity about his unpopular views on culture, race, and society. Seth, a smooth talking Jewish kid whose frugal spending habits affect his general health. Gene, an innocent and impressionable Christian boy who looks up to Amir for guidance. After seeing an advertisement for spring break in Cancun, they are hell bent on going to satisfy their wild fantasy of cute intoxicated girls. The only thing holding them back is their lack of funds. They develop a devious scheme to fabricate fake non-profit organizations and use them to fund raise. They go from door to door asking for donations from unsuspecting people in order to fund their trip to Cancun. Along the way, they encounter all sorts of characters including mutants, unabashed conservatives, and a MILF threatening Genes virginity. Their problems along the way include everything from dogs to violent old ladies. But, before they can combat all their problems the three friends need to learn to get along with each other first. Their assumptions of each others past and playful jabs at each others racial stereotypes will simply be the surface on their strong bonded friendship. Bigger problems start to rise as they approach their goal. Kyle, their occasional friend, is imitating their idea and stealing their donations; from those they were planning on stealing from. Things go from bad to worse when Amir gets into a fight with an old lady and knocks her off the second story of a mall. Now, faced with the dilemma of not having enough money to go to Cancun and Amir looking at 25 to life for non-consented euthanasia, the guys need to find a way out of their predicament and make it to Cancun.

Logline: Three college roommates with conflicting backgrounds try to fundraise for a spring break trip to Cancun.

FLIPPIN’ THE BIRD is a sports-comedy in the vein of “Dodgeball” about two college graduates who majored in psychology and have just begun their respective careers in the field. Teddy finds life is hard as his fiancé Janice constantly reminds him of his shortcomings. To make matters worse, Teddy is a terrible psychologist and his friend Haji is not enjoying his time in the field either. After a break-up with Janice, Teddy finds himself disgruntled with where his life is headed and takes time to evaluate things by staying with Haji. While reflecting on their circumstances at the beach one day, Teddy and Haji are invited into an impromptu game of badminton where they find they have a surprising knack for the sport. After a successful game, Willoby Greyhound, a homeless former badminton phenom takes notice in the duo and takes them under his wing to compete in a badminton tournament. While Teddy and Haji decline at first, Willoby’s sheer ability to teach the game effectively and the boys’ sheer hatred for their careers, convinces them to give the badminton tournament a try in hopes of taking them to a place away from the office, and into the limelight. While training for the tournament, Willoby’s past comes back to haunt him as his arch nemesis McGovern Bailey is coaching the competition. An insidious plan is hatched by McGovern Bailey to use his daughter to take Willoby’s team out of the tournament so he could regain power yet again. McGovern’s plan is foiled when his ex-girlfriend Connie comes back for revenge due to McGovern running out on her in her teenage years for getting pregnant. She uncovers the truth as to why Willoby Greyhound never went on to compete in the 1978 badminton finals against McGovern Bailey. With McGovern Bailey out of the way, Teddy, Haji, and Willoby set their sights on becoming badminton champions and shedding their past failures in society’s norms.

Logline: Two recent college graduates discover they hate their careers and trade in their office supplies for rackets and birdies.

I have writen a screenplay titled BENNY “B’S” CHARITY. It is a
family period, romantic drama of am young mans conflict with
himself, over the longer term true benefits the people receive for
charitable gifts they receive.
Last November I entered this screenplay script in the Amazon
Studio Contest. I am very suspicious that my script was never read.
This because there was only 17 days for the judges to read and decide on the winners . They claimed to have received several thousand scripts. No way can the few judges pick a winner in that
short time. I strongly suspect that titles were placed in a hat and winners drawn.
I do not believe that my script should have been a winning one,
However I would like to have a fair chance. Therefore my question.
Does Hollynorth Project edit and assist with a worthy script? If so
what is the cost to imptove a script?
